$0 to $10K: The Mindset & Strategy

Building a creative business from scratch can feel overwhelming—but the truth is, you don’t need magic, luck, or even endless talent to get started. In this video, I share exactly how I went from $0 to $10k as a surface designer and letterer, and how you can do it too—with real strategy, zero fluff, and a mindset that prioritizes progress over perfection. Whether you’re just starting out or stuck somewhere along the way, this video will help you focus on what actually works (and what to stop doing right now).

This post is part of my Art Biz Unfiltered Podcast-Style Videos series, where I share actionable strategies for building a creative business—step by step. If you’re wondering where to begin or why things aren’t working, this one’s for you.

4-phase system

Explore Broadly, Then Focus Deeply on One Thing.

When I first started, I didn’t teach, license, or have any following. I focused on print-on-demand, slowly testing ideas, learning from what worked, and ignoring what didn’t. In that first year, I made under $1,000—but in year two, I made a big leap by doubling down on what was working.

That’s the key: experiment broadly, then hyper-focus on the thing that brings real results. It might be one design, one product, or one platform—but when you find it, go all in before expanding. The mistake most artists make? Trying to mimic someone else’s finished strategy without doing the discovery first.

What to Stop Doing.

If you’re uploading designs endlessly without sales, chasing trends, or spending hours on social without conversions—pause and re-evaluate.

Stop Uploading hundreds of listings to platforms without proof

Stop Copying what works for other artists without checking if it fits your niche

Stop Creating beautiful but non-searchable designs

Stop Ignoring SEO and data-driven decisions

Stop Avoiding your numbers (they’re insight—not judgment)

Mindset Check: Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • “I don’t want to compromise my style.”

  • “I’m too overwhelmed to get organized.”

  • “I don’t look at my stats because they depress me.”

You’re not alone—but mindset matters. One big shift I made was separating bread-and-butter work from passion projects. It freed me up to make consistent income while still finding time to explore. You don’t need to love every design you make—but you do need to start showing up.

Get Organized Before You Grow.

One of the most overlooked aspects of growing an art business? File organization. Your artwork is a business asset—but only if you can find it and reuse it. I use Dropbox and a simple yearly folder system (no fancy tools needed), and it’s saved me countless hours as I scale across platforms.
