How to Draw Renaissance Motifs for Patterns & Graphics

HOW TO DRAW RENAISSANCE MOTIFS IN PROCREATE

Step 1 • Gather Renaissance Inspiration

Choose a historical reference filled with decorative swirls, leaves, and ornamental details. Studying authentic Renaissance artwork helps you understand the shapes before developing your own interpretation. Here is the link to the example used in this tutorial from the Met. 

 

Step 2 • Sketch Large Flowing Swirls

Start with loose sweeping curves instead of tiny details. Focus on creating movement and rhythm across the page before adding ornamentation.

Step 3 • Refine the Curves

Lower the opacity of your first sketch and redraw the swirls on a new layer using quicker, more fluid strokes. This second pass creates cleaner movement and more elegant forms.

Step 4 • Add Renaissance Motifs

Fill the spaces with leaves, pointed flourishes, scrolls, and decorative shapes. Combining many different motif types helps the illustration read as authentically Renaissance rather than simply decorative.

Step 5 • Finish the Final Drawing

Reduce the sketch opacity and complete a clean drawing on a fresh layer. Keep your lines relaxed and confident while preserving the handmade character of the artwork.

Step 6 • Turn the Artwork into Sellable Assets

Once your motifs are complete, reuse them to create repeating patterns, graphic packs, decorative borders, fonts, or Creative Market products. Building reusable design assets is what transforms one illustration into an entire collection.
