How I Made $9,000+ Selling Illustrated Calendars

Designing a calendar might sound like a huge time commitment, but with a focused plan and the right niche, it can become one of the most profitable and repeatable projects in your creative business. In this video, I’m breaking down exactly how I’ve sold over 1,400 calendars on Etsy, the time it really takes, what worked (and what didn’t), and why this might just be the best product you’ve never made.

Real Numbers, Smart Strategy & How You Can Start Today

This post is part of my YouTube series, where I take you behind the scenes of how I design and sell digital art online. If you’ve ever considered creating an illustrated calendar but felt overwhelmed by the process, keep reading—or press play.

Why Calendars Work (When Done Right)

For the past three years, I’ve been designing and selling two different illustrated calendars, repurposing them annually with new dates. With 2025 still in progress, I’ve already made $2,800 this year—bringing my total calendar profit to over $9,000 so far.

I sell through Etsy and use print-on-demand (no shipping required!), so most of the work happens upfront—designing, uploading, and taking thumbnail photos that convert. The payoff? You do the work once and continue earning every year with updated versions.

Time Spent vs. Long-Term Profit: Your first calendar page will take the longest—around 6 hours—as you establish your style, theme, and color palette. But by the final months, you’ll be moving fast, finishing pages in 2 hours or less.

Here’s what it looks like:

  • 13 illustrations (12 months + cover)
  • Average 4 hours per page
  • ~52 hours total = one week of work = 1 calendar
  • That same calendar can sell for years with minimal updates.

Even with print and Etsy fees, I earn about $6 profit per calendar. Multiply that by a few hundred sales per year, and you’ll see why this product is worth the effort.

SEO Over Aesthetics: Pretty art alone doesn’t sell calendars. The winning formula?
Great SEO + a proven theme + consistent style.

My bestsellers didn’t just happen—they were researched, planned, and marketed strategically. In my full calendar class, I walk you through my process for researching niches, choosing winning themes, and optimizing your Etsy listings so you get found.

From First Page to Final Product: The first step isn’t “make January”—it’s pick a month you’re excited to design. I always start with a page that motivates me, and once the first one’s done, I use it as a style guide for the rest.

Some of my key tips:

  • Make thumbnails bold and colorful for Etsy
  • Repurpose past designs for new years and languages
  • Consider formats that double as art prints
  • Start with research, then move to drawing
