(And Why Most Artists Are Wasting Time on the Wrong Platforms)
Feeling frustrated because you’re posting constantly… and nothing is happening? You’re not alone. Many artists are spending hours every week sharing their art using methods that don’t drive sales, licensing contracts, or quality traffic.
This post is part of my Art Biz Unfiltered series, where we cut through the hype and talk about what actually works to build a sustainable art business. Today we’re answering a big question:
Why does some art marketing work for other artists… but not for you?

This post is the written version of a podcast-style episode from my Art Biz Unfiltered Series, where I dig into real-world strategies for artists building a sustainable business. You can watch the full video on YouTube, or just listen while you’re working, walking, or organizing your studio!
Grab a notebook — we’re going to design a marketing strategy that fits your goals (not Instagram’s).
THE REAL REASON YOUR ART MARKETING ISN’T WORKING
Before we talk platforms…we need to talk about your goal.
Most artists fail at marketing because they start with:
- “I want more followers.”
- “I want more likes.”
- “I want more visibility.”
That’s not a goal. That’s a goal Instagram has for you.
A real goal sounds like:
- I want to sell wallpaper to interior designers.
- I want to license art to big brands.
- I want to grow a Spoonflower shop.
- I want to sell locally in coastal boutiques.
- I want to build a portfolio for licensing.
Everything changes when you define the target.
STEP 1: Define the Real Goal. Write this down:
- Who do you want to see your work?
- What do you want them to do?
- Where do you want them to buy/contact you?
- When should they respond?
- How should they feel?
Example:
“I want to sell historical wallpaper to interior designers who shop at high-end design stores.”
That immediately changes your strategy.
STEP 2: Go Where Your People Actually Are. Not every platform works for every goal.
Example 1: Coastal Art Seller: Sell locally in coastal shops. No Instagram needed. Foot traffic wins.
Example 2: Spoonflower Designer. Focus on: SEO, Strong design volume, Keyword optimization. Not: Instagram Reels, Random Pinterest posts, Chasing followers. Why? Because Spoonflower already has customers. Your job is to plug into their system.
Example 3: Licensing Artist. Focus on: A cohesive portfolio, Driving trackable traffic to your website, Pinterest over Instagram.
Pinterest = searchable + trackable
Instagram = scrolling + vibes
STEP 3: Use AI for Strategy (Not for Making Art)
Here’s a powerful use of AI: Feed it your: Ideal buyer, Goal, Platform, Posting frequency
Then ask: “Create a 3-month marketing plan to reach this audience.”
You’ll get 90% of the planning done. Then add your personality.
Don’t use AI to replace your creativity.
Use it to remove friction from planning.
STEP 4: Track Everything.
If you aren’t tracking, you aren’t growing. Some hard truths:
- Instagram traffic is hard to track.
- Spoonflower does not track Pinterest conversions.
- Non-trackable traffic is unreliable data.
If your goal is sales, prioritize platforms that show you:
- Conversion rates
- ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)
- Click tracking
STEP 5: Consistency Wins (But Only on the Right Platform).
Almost no one sees traction before 100 consistent posts. If you:
- Post 3 times a week
- For 1 year
- On the correct platform
- With a defined audience
You should see movement. If you don’t? You’re likely on the wrong platform.
PAY-TO-PLAY: Should You Run Ads?
Here’s my rule: Would you trade $1 for $2? If yes → ads can make sense. I use Etsy ads because: I can track conversion, I monitor ROAS and I turn off underperforming ads.
I do not boost Instagram posts. Boosting for vanity metrics ≠ sales strategy. More followers ≠ more sales. A medium-sized audience of real buyers is more powerful than viral fame.
